Saw Palmetto Overview

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a palm which is found abundantly in certain states of North America such as Florida, and Georgia. It is also found in Cuba and Bahamas as well. The extract comes from the fruit of the Saw Palmetto tree and is made into Saw Palmetto supplements. It is used traditionally for its benefits in nutrition, urinary and prostate health for men.

Saw Palmetto has general health benefits in prostate health, promoting healthy urinary flow, balancing hormone levels in preventing hair loss in men.

Saw Palmetto For Men

Saw Palmetto Benefits For Prostate

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease with symptoms of non-cancerous but abnormal prostate enlargement. It is common among older men and affects more than 75% of men in their 70s. Saw Palmetto is effective in improving BPH symptoms and reducing night time urination for men with BPH when used alone. Moreover, Permixon, a specific formulation from Saw Palmetto, can improve chronic prostatitis or chronic pelvic pain syndrome in men by reducing inflammation effect in prostate cells. This condition will lead to consistent pelvic pain, urinary problems and sexual problems if left untreated.

Saw Palmetto Benefits For Hair Loss

Besides that, Saw Palmetto can also help to prevent baldness and hair loss. This can be done by blocking the enzyme that is involved in the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen hormone that is shown to be the main cause of hair loss. High androgen hormones like DHT in the body will shorten the hair growth cycle and reduce the thickness and length of the hair strands.

Saw Palmetto For Women

Saw Palmetto has benefits for women too! It was suggested that Saw Palmetto can regulate specific female hormones by balancing the effect of testosterone in women with its estrogen-like property. Saw palmetto can also help to reduce high androgens and prolactin level in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS will excrete higher levels of male hormones and exhibit symptoms such as irregular and heavy menstrual period, excessive body and facial hair as well as acne.

Helps you pee less at night. Somewhat. I had used it before and quit, just restarted. You need to take it regularly for weeks to feel the effect but it does help a bit.

It’s going to be difficult to review this product simply because opinions vary on the subject of preventive medicine, but the one thing I can tell you by experience is that I have been taking Saw Palmetto since an early age (possible for 20 years!) as a prevention for prostate problems and related illnesses. So well, at the age of 63 I am still in perfect condition, sexually, normal and healthy. So I do believe that Saw Palmetto works as a preventive alternate supplement.

I have only taken Saw Palmetto for a couple of weeks but can already see an improvement in the frequency of my urine stream. So far so good.
